Abstract Emotions: Exhibition Curated by Adama Ka at the Dakar Biennale
On May 15, 2022, Abstract Emotions was presented at the Biennale of Dakar as part of its Off program. Curated by Adama Ka, the exhibition featured the work of Senegalese-American artist Modou Dieng Yacine. This powerful body of work paid tribute to the Senegalese Tirailleurs—Black soldiers who fought in wars for France between 1865 and 1960.
Blending painting and photography, Dieng Yacine reflected on the cultural values and histories of these soldiers, exploring their significance in contemporary African and diasporic societies. The exhibition offered a poignant exploration of abstraction and memory, leaving a lasting impression on its audience. Today, this exhibition continues to resonate as a thought-provoking dialogue between history and modern artistic expression.
